Program

During more than a decade of working with students, we found students can not focus more than 20 to 25 minutes. If they continue working on the same subject, after 20 minutes, they get bored or tired and won't have an efficient time.

At South Bay tutoring, we provide the Method of Variety, which helps students improve different aspects of their weakness, without getting bored or tired of being with us.

On the other side, we believe that academic skills and attention span, should improve in parallel. With improving students' academic skills, we need to improve their concentration as well. Strong academic skills with strong concentration improve student's confidence & motivation. These all will help students perform well at school.

For these reasons, students join us two, three, or four time a week, and each session is one hour long. We split the one hour among three different 20 minutes and in each 20 minutes, we work on different subjects, depending on the areas each student needs to work on. That's why each student has his or her own program depending on their assessment, parent's concerns, teacher's recommendations and student's needs.

For example a second grader who needs to improve reading, she may need to work on 3 different areas like: Phonics for 20 minutes, Math for 20 minutes, and reading comprehension for 20 minutes,  which adds to a one hour session. With this method the 2nd grader will improve different aspects of reading which is sight words and comprehending sentences parallel to improving math.

Or for a 6th grader who needs to improve his reading, the program could be: Reading comprehension (20 minutes) , Concentration (speed with improving test taking 20 minutes) , and Writing composition (20 minutes). With this combination, the 6th grader will improve comprehending sentences with improving vocabulary knowledge and using them in writing composition parallel improving concentration.

Or for an 8th grader who needs to improve math, the program could be: Math from school (20 minutes), Concentration (speed with improving test taking 20 minutes), catch up the area he/she is behind (20 minutes).

Summer Program

Summer time is the best time to catch up skill gaps or get ahead of school material. Students during school year rarely have time to focus on their academic skills. They mostly want to take care of their homework and get ready for tests. For those reasons, we help them improve their grades and finish their homework at our center. Either finishing homework or getting good grades doesn't mean their academic skills are sufficient to succeed. At the beginning of summer, we go over Diagnostic Assessment with each student to see where their strengths and weakness are. Since in the Summer, there is no school work, in every tutoring session we improve student's academic skills and help them to get ready for the following school year with confidence.
